Brain Damage Due to Marijuana Same with Schizophrenia

Posted By admin Thursday, October 27, 2011

The use of cannabis is continuously not only makes people addicted but also damage the brain and body. A recent study found that marijuana caused brain damage similar to damage in people with schizophrenia (mental disorder).

A recent study British researchers found that marijuana aka cannabis can cause impaired concentration and memory similar to that occurring in people with schizophrenia.

In the study, researchers measured the electrical activity of hundreds of neurons in the brains of rats given drugs that mimic the effects of cannabis, the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana.

Drug effects on individual brain regions is quite subtle but really disturbing the coordination of brain waves in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Both of these brain structures important for memory and decision making, as well as playing a key role in schizophrenia.

"Abuse of marijuana is common among people with schizophrenia and recent studies have shown that the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana can cause some symptoms of schizophrenia in healthy participants," said Matt Jones of the University of Bristol, as reported by HealthDay, Thursday (27/10/2011).

According to Matt Jones, the findings are important for the understanding of mental illness, which may arise as a consequence of the 'brain disorder' and can be treated with the reset of brain activity.

"These results represent an important step forward in our understanding of how the activity rhythm in the brain underlying thought processes in health and disease," said study author Michal Kucewicz.

The results of this study was dipublikasian on 25 October in the Journal of Neuroscience.
